about

Cuarteto Victoria is led by Rafael Hernández, one of the most important figures in Latin music in the United States. He penned what is considered to be the first Latin protest song in the U.S. (“Lamento Borincano”) during the Great Depression. The group is named in honor of his sister Victoria who owned one of the most seminal Latin record shops in New York City called ‘Almacenes Hernandez’ on Madison Ave and 114th St in El Barrio.

Founded in New York City in 1934, Cuarteto Victoria rearranged and recorded some of their 1930s classics for this 1963 album. Along with classics such as 1939’s “Sinceridad” and 1934’s “Maria Elena, No Llores,” El Auténtico features a newer Rafael Hernández composition “Ven Ven Ven” composed in 1963.
