about

Puerto Rican group Sexteto Borinquen are led by tres-player and singer Mario Hernández and feature Pompo on lead vocals.

As a kid from Rio Piedras, PR, Mario Hernández heard the Cuban tres guitar on the radio and fell in love with its sound. His uncle gave him an old guitar and Mario fashioned it into what, to him, sounded like a tres, by re-stringing it until it was close enough to the real deal.

In 1950 he put together “Los Diablos del Caribe” which featured the first performances by the legendary Ismael Rivera, then 14 years old. Throughout his career, Ismael insisted on hiring Mario to play tres on his recordings.

By 1956, Mario Hernández, along with the Los Diablos del Caribe singer, Ignacio Carabello left Puerto Rico for NYC where they reformed the “Los Diablos del Caribe.” They performed at the exclusive Manhattan Center as well as at the Palladium Ballroom, alternating with the three greats, Machito, Tito Puente, and Tito Rodriguez.

In 1961, Mario started a new group, “Sexteto Borinquen," which is the combo he maintained until his death in 2013.
