about

Like its neighbors, Haiti developed a music style influenced by both African rhythms and European music. While the Dominican Republic has merengue, Haiti has méringue, and in the 1950s bandleader Nemours Jean-Baptiste developed a style of méringue that became a symbol of Haitian identity: the konpa, aka compas direct or kompa direk. Ansonia captured this new musical development on Ensemble Nemours Jn. Baptiste’s album “Musical Tour of Haiti.”
