about

Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on November 18, 1945, Haitian bandleader and accordionist, Pepé Bayard began his musical journey in 1957 when his father, Colonel Georges Bayard, gave him a piano accordion. With lessons from one of the best accordion teachers in Haiti, it wasn’t long before Pepé mastered the instrument. At 15, he formed a teen band that became popular in Haiti.

In 1963, Pepé moved to New York City for college. To pay for his tuition, he began performing in clubs. He formed his own orchestra after meeting bassist, and fellow Haitian, Manno Mathieu. The orchestra featured Pat Coby on battery/drums, Jean Donnay on saxophone, Carlos Ramirez on piano, and Martinique-native Gary French on lead vocals.

Pepé Bayard et son Orchestre recorded their first album for Ansonia Records, “On Tour in Haiti,” in 1967. The album features interpretations of Haitain classics like “Choukoun” and “Trois Bebes” as well as a cover of Joe Cuba’s song that put boogaloo on the map, “Bang Bang.”
