about

Plena is a rural Afro-Puerto Rican genre that was used to spread messages, kind of like a “sung newspaper” similar to Mexican corridos. The music is participatory and energetic. Performers criticized relevant social concerns of Puerto Rican society from the perspective of the commoner. Ansonia has an essential collection of plenas sung by kings like Ramito and Manuel Jiménez, two of the most famous plena singer songwriters.

In the 50s and 60s, trumpeter César Concepción transformed the folkloric plena into a slick big-band format with singer Joe Valle. They recorded several albums for Ansonia which are ripe with “saoco” which means swing, joy, tight rhythm and danceable movement.
